I recently installed a new ductless heat pump mini split. Mini Splits are great for sun rooms, add-ons to the house, garage, or a man cave/she shed. They are extremely efficient (this particular one was 19 SEER). So efficient in fact that most of them don’t come in a low SEER rating. Thanks to inverter technology of the compressor and fan motors the boards use communicating technology to constantly change the speed and torque of the motors to run at peak efficiency. The biggest discrepancy for people is they assume they are very cheap because they are so small. Well no I’m sorry they are not. There is a lot of cutting edge technology in these mini splits and because of this they are very expensive, but much much cheaper than a traditional split system that would be rated 19 SEER. On average a mini split will cost anywhere between $3,000-$5,000 (depending on the application) and a traditional split system of the same efficiency would cost between $11,000-$15,000. That’s a major difference; so really mini splits are actually very cheap in terms of their capability and efficiency.
P.S. buying your own on the internet is a total waste of money. They are knock off brands made in other countries, they have many, many problems, most clients not only don’t know how to install them but don’t have the tools either, they have no warranty, there are no parts in our country for them, and most HVAC technicians will refuse to work on them. Play it safe and buy your mini split from an expert who can provide expert installation and a warranty.
