Why Won’t My AC Lower the Humidity in Coastal South Carolina

Quick answer
Why your AC runs but the air still feels muggy
If your AC runs but the house still feels humid, it is cooling the air without removing enough moisture from it. Set the thermostat fan to auto, check the air filter, and open every supply and return vent. If the air stays muggy after those checks, the coil, the refrigerant charge, or the size of the system needs a technician.
Check these three things first
Three checks take about five minutes and fix a lot of muggy houses. Start here before you call.
- Set the thermostat fan to auto, not on. On the on setting the blower runs even when the system is not cooling, so it pushes moisture that has collected on the coil back into your rooms.
- Check the air filter. A clogged filter starves airflow and can ice the coil. ENERGY STAR recommends checking the filter every month and changing it at least every three months, and on the coast every 30 to 60 days is closer to right during summer. Source: ENERGY STAR.
- Open every supply and return vent. Closed or blocked registers cut the airflow the system needs to dry the air evenly.
If the house still feels damp after those three, the cause is inside the equipment, and that is where a technician comes in.
What stops an AC removing humidity
An air conditioner has two jobs. It cools the air, and it pulls moisture out of it as warm air passes over the cold evaporator coil. When the second job fails, the thermostat still reads a fair temperature but the house feels clammy. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Source: U.S. EPA.
The most common causes
Most muggy-house calls trace to airflow or system size, and both are easy for a technician to confirm by measurement. See our AC maintenance and repairs for how we test each one.
- The thermostat fan is set to on, so it recirculates air the coil already gave its moisture back to.
- A clogged filter or a dirty evaporator coil chokes airflow, and a starved coil can freeze and then blow cold, damp air.
- The system is oversized for the home. An oversized air conditioner cools the house quickly, then shuts off before it can wring the moisture out of the air. These short cycles leave the room cool and still damp.
Less common but worth ruling out
A few causes need instruments, not a screwdriver. Do not open the electrical panel or add refrigerant yourself.
- A low refrigerant charge keeps the coil from getting cold enough to condense water out of the air.
- Leaky return ducts pull humid air in from the attic or a crawlspace and mix it back into the house.
- A blocked condensate drain lets the water the system removed sit and re-evaporate instead of draining away.
Comfort Masters holds South Carolina HVAC license 38846 and North Carolina license 36196, and works on every major brand, including Goodman and Ruud. If the humidity holds after the three home checks, and especially if the air is also not cooling the way it should, it is time for a diagnosis.
Why coastal South Carolina makes this worse
The Grand Strand gives an air conditioner more moisture to fight and less room for error. A system that would keep up inland can fall behind here. That is why humidity shows up as a problem on the coast long before it would somewhere drier.
The Grand Strand moisture load
Coastal South Carolina sits in a hot and humid climate zone, and summer design temperatures reach 93 to 96 degrees with high humidity that holds for months. Your AC runs almost nonstop from April through October, so any shortfall in drying the air adds up fast. Salt air also corrodes and fouls the outdoor coil sooner than inland air does, which slowly cuts how well the system pulls moisture out. Our complete guide to coastal Carolina HVAC covers how the climate shapes every system here.
Rentals and closed-up coastal homes
Vacation rentals and second homes are humidity traps. When a house sits empty between guests with the thermostat set high or off, the air conditioner barely runs, and indoor humidity climbs. Damp, still air is where mold gets a foothold. A coastal home that sits closed up needs a humidity plan, not just a temperature setting.
What we check at Comfort Masters
Humidity is a symptom. We diagnose the cause by measurement, not by guesswork, and we put the findings in writing before we recommend anything. A technician checks airflow, the evaporator coil, the refrigerant charge, and the ductwork, and confirms whether the unit is oversized with a Manual J load calculation. Repair comes before replacement whenever the math supports it.
What the diagnostic visit costs
The visit starts with a full diagnostic. A service call is 55 dollars in Little River and Calabash and 95 dollars in the other service areas, and it covers the technician’s time to find the problem and write up the findings. Any repair is quoted separately, after the diagnosis, and you approve the price first. To keep the coil clean and the drain clear through the season, a coastal HVAC maintenance plan runs 115 dollars a year for one visit or 175 dollars for two.
When a whole-home dehumidifier makes sense
Sometimes the system is the right size and working, and the coastal load still runs the humidity high. That is when a whole-home dehumidifier earns its place, working with the AC to hold the number down. It is not a cover for a dirty coil or a low charge, so we confirm the system is healthy first. See our whole-home dehumidifier and air-quality options if a diagnosis points that way.
When humidity becomes a safety issue
A muggy house is usually a comfort problem. Two situations are not, and they come first. A hot, humid house is a health risk for the people in it, and a struggling system can become an electrical hazard.
700+
More than 700 people die from heat-related causes in the U.S. each year.
Infants, adults over 65, and anyone with a heart or lung condition are most at risk when the house is hot and humid. If anyone shows heat stroke signs, call 911 first. The repair can wait.

Signs to treat as an emergency
Watch the people before the equipment. Confusion, fainting, a body temperature that keeps climbing, or hot, dry skin are heat stroke signs, so call 911 first. If you smell burning or see smoke from the system, or there is standing water around the electrical, shut the unit off at the breaker and call a technician. Do not keep running a system that smells hot.
Health effects of long-term damp air
Air that stays above 60 percent humidity gives mold, dust mites, and mildew what they need to grow, which can trigger allergies and asthma. If damp air has been a problem for weeks, deal with the moisture source and see a doctor about any symptoms. Do not wait it out and assume it will pass on its own.
Common questions
Humidity with the AC on, answered.
Why is my house still humid when the AC is running?
Cooling and drying are two different jobs. Your AC cools the air but is not pulling enough moisture out of it, usually because the fan is set to on, the filter or coil is dirty, or the unit is oversized and short cycling. Check the fan and filter first, then book a diagnosis if the air stays damp.
Does setting my thermostat fan to on make humidity worse?
Yes. On the on setting the blower runs even when the system is not actively cooling. It blows air back across a wet coil and carries that moisture into your rooms. Switch the fan to auto so it runs only during cooling cycles, which gives the system time to drain the water it removed.
Can an oversized air conditioner cause high indoor humidity?
Yes. An oversized unit cools the house fast, then shuts off before it runs long enough to dry the air, so the rooms feel cool and still damp. The fix is not always new equipment, so we confirm the sizing with a Manual J load calculation before recommending anything.
What indoor humidity level should I aim for?
The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Above 60 percent, mold and dust mites take hold. A simple hygrometer lets you track the number, and a reading that stays high with the AC running is a reason to call a technician.
Will a whole-home dehumidifier fix a muggy coastal house?
Sometimes, but only after a diagnosis. If the system is the right size and working, and the coastal load still runs the humidity high, a whole-home dehumidifier is the right tool. If the real problem is a dirty coil or a low charge, a dehumidifier only masks it, so we check the system first.
When is high humidity with the AC on an emergency?
High humidity itself is rarely an emergency, but the conditions around it can be. If anyone shows heat illness signs like confusion or fainting, or you smell burning or see smoke from the system, call 911 first. For an electrical or water hazard at the unit, shut it off at the breaker and call a technician.
